Windows 2000 Install won't read underscores in file extensions

I'm running the Windows 2000 installation from the CD.
It is needing literally thousands of little files in the
i386 subdirectory of the CD. Most of the files in this
subdirectory have the underscore character in the last
position of the file extension. Eg. .dll files
are .dl_, .exe files are .ex_ but the install program is
looking for the full file name without the underscore.

Why would the install program not know how to access the
files that came with it?? I've started trying to copy to
files and burn them to another cd-RW and changing the
file extensions, but it requires so many files, this
could take DAYS!! Surely there must be a better way to
get the W2K Install CD to read its own files.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

How are you installing? It may be your CD-Rom drive is damaged and or
non-compliant. Try another drive. Those files with the trailing underscore
are in a compressed state.

To do a clean install, either boot the Windows 2000 CD-Rom or setup disks.
The set of four install disks can be created from your Win2k CD-rom; change
to the \bootdisk directory on the cd-rom and execute makeboot.exe (from dos)
or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the prompts.

When you get to the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions
found. After you delete the partition(s) abort the install, then again
restart the pc booting the CD-Rom or setup disks to avoid unexpected drive
letter assignments with your new install.
