Specifically, In windows 2000, how do I default software
opening setups. Which graphics program opens when I want
to view a photo?

My Example; I have 6 different photo handling software
programs, each gives different options. Only one I want
to open any time I wish to view a photo. How do I make
that one the default???

Thanks for your help.

Dick - this "default" opening is called an "association."
Look up the ASSOC command in Help/Reference/MSDOS Commands,
or at a command prompt type
ASSOC /?
to see the syntax.

Lots of programs (such as imagehandlers) will, when you
install them, associate certain filetypes with themselves
automatically. That's not always what you want. ASSOC can
fix things.

By defining file type associations. The easiest method; While in Explorer,
right click on a file of the type in question, then
choose "Open With", "Choose Program", then choose and check the box for
"Always use this program....."

To add to what others have said, sometimes you can set up the file
associations from within the application itself (Paintshop Pro and
Photoshop to name but two). This is normally done in the application's
"Preferences" dialog and will let you select from a multitude of file
types for which to make the application the default all in one go.

If you want to set a single application to be the default for a whole
bunch of different file extensions (jpg. tif, bmp, gif .....etc) this
is probably the quickest way to go about it.
