I'm not sure this is the right group, but its the closest I could find.

I am cleaning a Windows 2000 Professional PC that was badly infected with
viruses and other nastys. I ran a final defrag at the end of the process
and now the machine will not start properly.

It shows the Windows 2000 splash screen and then after a little while shows
the blue background with a cursor in the middle of the screen - just an
arrow, not an hourglass. And there it sits..........

I've tried a repair and every type of safe mode I can find but to no avail.

I'm trying to avoid a reinstall of Windows 2000, but am running out of
ideas.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Jeremy.

If my machine had been badly affected by viruses and other nasties
then I would rebuild it. Virus scanners can do only so and so much
when cleaning up. It's like you getting smallpox: The medication
may eliminate the virus but your face will be marked forever.

When rebuilding the machine, remember to disconnect your PC
from the Internet until your virus scanner and your firewall are
completely operative. I've seen newly built machines that got
infected within five minutes of connecting to the Internet.
