I have a few machines random types that hang when starting
up windows 2000. They are stalled at this windows

"Preparing network connections.." Does anyone have an
idea why or what is the fix??

I can boot up the machines fine without the network cable
plugged into the back of the network card. And then once
they get to the Windows Security screen, plug the cable
back in and the user can log on.

These are all Dell computers two are GX110 one is a
notebook C610 and the other a Precision workstation.

Please help... I am going nuts..

Hi Jas,
The problem you have described is exactly the same that I am experiencing. We have over 20 machines that have Win2000 Pro on Compaq Desktops, and all of them happen to have the same problem.
This problem came a couple of days after I had removed the virus 'korgo variant' and installed Lsass vulnerability patch.

Well, indeed, this post helped us along!
Our situation: Windows 2000 Server (only domain controller in AD
domain).
We haven't been able to boot without network cable, it still would
hang at the "preparing.." prompt.

After booting into safe mode (trust me, much more then 1 time :)),
we've uninstalled the "patch" and we're running again!

For your info, the patch is found in Q835732. You should be able to
find it in add/remove software.. (the uninstall that is)

More info on: http://www.microsoft.com/netherlands/TechNet/security/bulletins/ms04-011.asp

Please let me know if you have any (positive/negative) feedback about
this one..

Cheers,

stoffell
