When ever I try to install windows 2k pro or win2k server it always hangs
when the screen says detecting devices. Does anyone know what may cause this.

Many times this can be caused by mainboards that aren't fully ACPI
compliant. Force a non-ACPI HAL by hitting F7 (<---not a typo) when, shortly
after booting from the CD, instructed to hit F6 to load additional drivers.
This will force the installer to use a non-ACPI HAL without further action
on your part. Also be aware that the installer will not acknowledge in any
way that you've hit F7, it'll just use a different HAL.

Hello,
We are in the middle of PnP detection so simplifying the machine is
very
helpful when we have problems like,

If it still hangs, do a Shift - F10, which should open a CMD window.
you should be able to use notepad to see what are in the setup log
files.
Of particular interest would be>
The last 10-20 lines of:
\Windows\Setupapi.log
\Windows\PnPlog.txt
\Windows\Setuplog.txt
Possibly also \Windows\setupact.log
Pnplog.txt is the really interesting one, if you have a PnP detection
that
is failing this log file gets generated on the reboot, IT should point
to
what was being detected at the time of the hang. Ideally we try to
skip
the device causing problems on reboots, so each reboot we try to skip
the
next device in the chain. However if we are just ennumerating devices
we
may not have devices to skip. ( USB chain would be an example,
parallel
ports would be another)

I am having the same problem. The system hangs during the "detecting
and installing devices" portion of the setup. I checked the
setupapi.log file and the last line says the following:

-Could not locate section "Clean.services" (or the section is empty).

Any clues on what this is?

No. What you should do is if detecting and installing devices does not
progress after 15 to 30 minutes, just reset the computer and let it
resume where it left off. After one or more cycles, it should get past
this phase.

I have tried this about 9 times with no luck. I even went as far as
receding the RAM, raid cards, etc. Still no luck. Any other tips?
Thanks!
