Hallo all,

We currently have 2 W2K domains, say domain A and domain
B. Due to recent developments we need to create a new
domain, say domain C, and have this as the only domain.
Thus we need to create domain C and migrate all the
existing users from domain A and B into C. Now we have
loads of w2k clients and what I need to find out is when
the users log on using their user name on the new domain
C, will it use the same profile on the client machine as
they were using on their old domain, or will it create a
new profile as though it was a completely different user?
Any info is much appreciated.
Thanks

I would take a look at Active Directory Migration Tools (
ADMT v2 ). This will help you migrate just about
everything from DomainA and DomainB to DomainC. Question
for you: are DomainA and DomainB in the same forest?
Will DomainC be in the same forest as the other two? or
are you creating an entirely new forest / tree / domain (
aka DomainC )?

Take a look at the following MSKB Article:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-
us;326480&Product=win2000

The above article is more for WIN2000 to WIN2003. Will
DomainC be WIN2003? However, at the bottom of this
article there is a link for more information on ADMT.

You could also take a look at MOVETREE. Please look at
the following MSKB Article:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-
US;238394

To answer your direct question, I do not believe so. In
all the migrations that I have done ( the last one being
about 16 months ago! ) we did it the "slow and dumb"
way. We sat at each of the 105 WIN2000 Pro systems,
manually joined it to the new domain and logged on as the
user. We then went to the 'users profile' and copied
the "old" profile over to the "new" profile. That worked
very well. Not very efficient, though.

HTH,

Cary

thanks Cary,

i have not yet looked at the links youve posted, but just
to let you know the domains are all separate forests, etc
and they are/will all be windows 2000
We have about 1000 clients, so, i hope there is a way

cheers

Yes you need to use ADMT and you must run Security
Translation (re-ACLing) on all domain members from each
source domain.
