Hello,

I tried to use NETBIOS aliases on my W2k DC with Sp3 by adding
OptionalNames REG_MULTI_SZ value in registry. But I have problem: when
server starts it registers these aliases names with WINS server but all
these entries are in released state:/ Why? What am I doing wrong? I
tried to set netbios alias on member server and there all entries in
Wins server are in active state. I tried to set netbios alias on two
different DCs but result was the same:/ Can anyone help me? Thanks.

OptionalNames won't work and is unsupported. You need to follow this KB
article:

281308 Connecting to SMB Share on a Windows 2000-Based Server May Not Work
with

Yes, I allready did that and everything works. Must I use this approach
only on DC or on any W2k server? On W2k member server optionalnames work
without any problems. Is there any limitations when going to the server
through alias? I saw user complaints that they are not seeing printers queues.

Hi,

You should use the steps in Q281308 for any Windows 2000 server that you
need to use an alias with. You SHOULD NOT use the OptionalNames hack. It is
unsupported, untested and could cause problems.
