Windows 2000 client not picking up IP address from DHCP server

I have a W2K computer (sp4) that is not behaving on the network as expected.

The adapter is not picking up the ip address from the DHCP server. It is
assigning the internal ip address 169...etc. to itself even though 1) it's
set to pickup the ip address, 2) it does have link lights and is properly
located on the network. 3) the computer next to it on the same segment is
doing everything right.

If I force and IP address on the adapter (192.168.1.153) I can ping the
local router, ping the outside world (Yahoo via its ip address) but can not
ping www.yahoo.com. I can not access the internet via the ip address for
Yahoo either. If I type in http://66.218.71.86 I get the page cannot be
displayed message.

In setup, I have the Microsoft client installed and TCP/IP. Both are turn on
and appear to be properly configured.

Can someone point me to a solution? This is the first time I haven't just
loaded up the network on a W2K box and have it work.

Thanks in advance for the assistance.

Regards,

Bill

I had the same thing happen last month. It was driving me nuts so instead of
waiting for a technical answer I went ballistic and removed the NIC. This
all started after installing some outlaw PPPoe software on the respective
client. I still am not sure what caused the problem. I flushed the DNS cache
several times and then removed the NIC. After reinstalling card along with
the new protocol she behaved much better. No new problems as yet.

Be interesting to find out the technical answer though.

Good luck.
