Hi, I have a dual-boot system with Windows 2000 sp4 and Mandriva Linux
that was installed on the computer when I got it. Whenever I start
Windows, the error message comes up "Windows 2000 could not start
because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\WINNT\system32\DRIVERS\pci.sys" I know that I have to repair the
installation and I have made a bootable cd and have 4 bootable
floppies, but i have no idea how to boot to them. I have tried
starting the computer with the cd or floppy in the drive, but it won't
boot to it. First, it goes to the "hp invent" screen then it goes to
the operating system selection screen. Once I select Windows 2000, I
push F8 to go to the advanced menu, but no option I select leads to
booting to the cd or floppy. Help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

'Twould be nice if there was a standard key to press to enter CMOS setup,
but there isn't.
On an HP computer it is F1, not Del.

The O/P needs to set BIOS to boot first from the CD.
Then boot from the Windows 2000 CD and enter the Recovery Console.
Then change to the i386 directory on the CD and issue the following command:
expand pci.sy_ %systemroot%\system32\pci.sys

That will fix this particular issue however upon reboot other issues may
arise.
The O/P needs to find out why pci.sys went missing in the first place. There
may be a hard disk problem ... lost clusters or something.

-Standards? I love standards ... there are so many to choose from-
