I have an installation cd of windows 2000 but the only way I can
install the OS is to create 4 floppy and boot the system from those.
The problem is that, after loading the floppy, my system does not
recognize my external usb cd rom aborting the installation.
Nevertheless I can boot my system from the cd rom and install others
OS (Linux, XP, and so on). I would like to know if exist a windows
2000 version installable directly from cd (without the need to create
the floppy) or if there is a way to work this problem out. Thanks.

Lansalo,

I formatted my development machine with just the Windows 2000 CD 3 days ago

Go into the BIOS, change CD ROM to first boot device & press F10 (save & Exit)

Press a key when Windows asks to boot from CD ROM & it will load setup.

Delete the partition where Windows 2000 is installed & re-create it. Format to
NTFS & let Windows 2000 setup do its thing.

At the end it will ask you to remove the CD in the drive & restart

Job Done.

When you are ready change the boot order again in the BIOS if needed, but I left
mine as DVD, Floppy, HDD instead of Floppy, HDD, DVD

The four floppy disks are used to bootup from a system that cannot boot from the
CD-ROM drive or if the CD disc itself is not bootable. This is simply an
alternate method to startup a PC in order to install or repair Windows 2000,
it's not a method to start an existing Windows configuration.

Booting from the CD-ROM drive has two requirements:
1) The PC system must be designed to bootup from this device (very common in
today's systems...not so much with some older ones)

2) The disc itself must be bootable. This is true of an original Windows 2000
disc and any properly made copy of one (it has to be a 1:1 copy...not just a
file copy version).

If your PC system is capable of booting from the CD-ROM drive, then you have two
options:

1) Get another copy made but this time be sure that it's a 1:1 copy of an
original or a copy of a bootable version.

2) Create your own bootable CD using your existing disc as a file source. If you
have Nero installed, here's a procedure for making a bootable CD. This page also
has a link to download the necessary boot image file that you'll need.

this problem discussed here is because of the NON Bootable
Installation Disc. to Install from the CD Rom that is not bootable you
can do following ;

Convert your installation CD into Bootable one. to do this, you can
use another system where OSis working properly. Open New CD Dialog
from Nero. Choose Bootable CD Rom and type the Address of A: in source
drive. Now copy all the files and folders from your installation cd to
the New Cd Contents. Don't try to change the Order of files. Now burn
the disc. this new disc will boot your system without floppies. and
install the OS.

Thanks for trying to help.
I tried VERY hard, several times, to communicate that the devices are not
bootable. The disk IS bootable...just nothing to boot it on.
