I have just acquired an old pc with Windows 2000
professional OS. I am trying to network with my main pc
which runs Windows XP. However, althought I have made a
cable connection and the icon appears on the Windows 2000
machine, I cannot access the internet etc. I am on
broadband connected to the XP machine. I have tried
everything that I have read so far but to no avail. The
XP network setup disk does not work with Windows 2000.
All help very much appreciated.

Cee...

Please include your setup and what is connected where, i.e. router, XP
connection, W2K connection, shared/switched hub, type of cable (patch,
cross, serial, etc.), error messages, etc.

I cannot access the Internet, I have made a cable connection, the icon
appears on the Windows 2000 machine, I am on broadband connected to the XP
machine, I have tried everything that I have read so far, are not clear.

This would be better:

I have a cable modem connected [directly to my XP PC || to a switch]. I
have two NICs in my XP computer and connected my W2K computer to it with a
[ patch cable || x-over cable]. When my W2K computer is connected I cannot
get to the Internet on my XP computer.

From what you have listed, I have no idea what your actual setup is so if
you were to be more specific, we won't have to guess or assume what you
actually have and you can get an answer quicker to resolve your issue.
