Hi

Anonone ever had this strange problem?

I have on compaq evo 310 microtower pc with windows 2000 Finnish + sp3.
Suddenly email client (outlook 2000) started to say that its unable to
connect to smtp.xxx.fi server. Name resolution is working ok and i can ping
smtp.xxx.fi server. So i tried with outlook express and same problem. Next
thing was that i did following updates...

Office 2000 sr1 + sp3
Windows 2000 sp4 + all windows updates available

.... but still same problem so i...

Updated nic driver
removed all networking components and reinstallede them
tried another ip

.... but still same problem with smtp

So though that must be a strange nic problem! So i switched hardrive to
identical compaq chassis and tried but still same problem. It is now certain
that this is software problem!! So how can i reset all network setting and
remove files etc. so that i can fix this problem without doing format c:???
Everyone thinks that tcp/ip stack is corrupted or something...

If name resolution and ping are working ok , then I would suggest the
TCP/IP stack may also be OK.
Assuming you are using DNS rather than a local hosts file.

OK, I know ping is ICMP , and name resolution is UDP rather than TCP
but...

Can you use any other TCP based programme (web browsing for example)?

Can you access the mail server from another PC ok?

If not, then I would suggest the server gets investigated - just because
ping works does not mean that it's services are all up and working.

Good luck!

I forget to mention that email account is working perfectly when using
another computer with exactly same settings. Everything else internet,
windows networking and incoming mail is working.

Hi
Hi,

Have you tried to telnet to your email server on port 25?
If you get your email server banner, then the problem is
isolated to your email clients.
