I've been reading about all the component services that don't really need
to be run using Windows 2000 Pro with broadband and one is not on a local
network. Things like telephony, NETBIOS, remote registry service and of
course messenger service.
I was just reading the Wiki on DNS and it stated that if you're using DHCP,
then DNS is probably superfluous (and DHCP might even be disabled).
Another site said that if you set DHCP to manual, and reboot, if it's
needed it will start. Well, mine didn't start upon reboot, and when I
tried to access the www, I couldn't. When I restarted DHCP manually, I was
able to access the net.
I guess my questions are:
1) Will disabling DNS service slow down my download and upload speeds?
Further reading stated that the DNS cache remembers the HOSTS file and
disabling it means that each program has to check it again when starting (I
hope I'm getting this right.
It has something to do with DNS reading all HOSTS blocks with the site name
and if its disabled only the first name pertaining to that site is read.
2) Is there a site that explains all the services for Windows 2000 Pro SP4?
I found an XP post on governmentsecurity.org, but haven't found a similar
page for Windows 2000.

3) How will closing various services affect VOIP modems if its the only
other item attached to a router?
