The subject says it all. I would like to migrate my AD from my PDC to
another computer with different h/w. Everytime I try to backup/restore
"system state data" the computer locks and I have to re-install Windows
2000. I have looked at the article here:
http://support.microsoft.com/Default.aspx?kbid=249694
This article is unclear in some places. Before I went through with this
procedure I was wondering if anyone has tried this themselves and has any
pointers. All I want to do is backup/restore the AD, nothing else.

but you can take a different approach by installing an additional domain
controller and replicating all the data.

I have already tried to replicate the data. It locked up. I went backed up
the "System State Data" because I read that is where the AD is stored. The
problem is that this also backs up h/w information, hence the lockup when I
try to restore it to another machine with completely different h/w. Maybe I
don't understand your "different approach." Can you elaborate? I have
already installed the new computer as a DC in the AD of the current PDC.
Now it is time to transfer all the AD to the new DC without a lockup. Any
ideas are welcome, I know someone has done this before.

Backup and restore to the new hardware.

Then perform a "Repair Install" to straighten out
any hardware issues.

It works, but worst case you still have the original
machine and the backup tape.
