I have a laptop with windows 2000 pro and sometime when i boot up windows it
freezes when it says appling security policy or it will do a screen dump and
reboot. I can boot into safe mode fine. I have ran dell diagnostics and all
the hardware is fine. How can i reinstall windows without ruining the
programs or settings. Or is there a utility that will look for the corrupted
files and bad registry entries and fix it?

Dump the contents of the IE Temporary Internet Folder cache (TIF)

start --> settings --> control panel --> internet options --> delete files

Open a Command Prompt.

In the Command Prompt type the following...

CHKDSK C: /F

If it replies..
"Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process.
Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts?
(Y/N)"

Choose - Y

type; EXIT

Reboot the PC.

A full Check Disk will want to be performed, allow it.

When it reboots, perform a defragmentation of the hard disk.

You can get to the Defragmenting program easily by executing; dfrg.msc

Start --> run ->
type; dfrg.msc

Did that already and still the same thing. I need to somehow reinstall
windows without loosing info and settings.

It would have helped if you stated you performed a complete Check Disk !

Ghost the platform to a Ghost image.

Wipe the hard disk and reinstall Win2K SP4 and all post SP4 updates.

Restore data from the Ghost image to their respective destination locations on the rebuilt
platform.

This would be a nice feature that I could avail myself of.

I just intalled Ghost, and am new to the program, although
I used Drive Image a few years back.

However, in restoring selected programs from the Ghost image,
I don't understand how their registry setting will get applied.

Is Ghost truly capable of restoring selected programs and their
registry data, etc.?

You wouldn't do programs. Just data.

Even if you could it would NOT be wise as it could put you back into an unstable platform
condition.

Programs can be reinstalled, its the data that's priceless !

Now if you had a Ghost image of the Win2K SP4 platform when it was stable you could use it.
You would create an image of the unstable platform then restore the image of the satble
platform. Then you could use Ghost Explorer and extract data to their respective
destination locations and you would be back to working condition with your data rather
quickly.

I used Enterprise Ghost v7.0 and 8.0 in a corporate environment and Ghost is the only
Symantec software I swear by and not swear at.

Why do you need Ghost for a one shot backup? Just copy/burn
with/without compression (ZIP, RAR.. etc) your data. Something I've
been doing lately for redundancy is using PARs when burning data.

Disk imaging programs are useful only when imaging complete
installations and special backup programs only when doing scheduled
and/or incremental backups.

The advantage is it gets everything and does NOT require the OS to be loaded. The majority
of backup applications require the OS be loaded to make the backup. So do compresiion
applications susch as RAR and ZIP. Using Ghost by booting from a Ghost Boot Disk is fast,
effective, and gets *everything*.
