hello all,

My daughter and son-in-law just called and told me they have a bunch
of viruses on their Dell Computer (which model I do not know) but they
are running Windows 2 K, they have Norton antivirus 2001 that has not
been updated and when they tried to install the 2004 but it would not
function properly. I suggested that they go to Norton web site and do
an online bars check to at least get the names of the virus or viruses
that they have on their computer. The computer is operating very
slowly and, in Windows task Manager it shows that the CPU is running
100 percent all the time with no other activity on or off of the
Internet.

Does anyone have any other suggestions that could help them out. I am
not familiar with Windows 2 K so we can use all the help we can get,
as they been working on it for the last four days. I live a little
over 500 miles from them so what help I can give will have to be over
the telephone.

I thank you ahead of time,
Albert

Did they uninstall Norton 2001 first?

They can do an online scan at http://housecall.antivirus.com - it may take a
while, but it should run if they can get to the site.

After they get up and running and have good AV software installed & set to
update itself regularly, make sure they also get a good firewall....and run
Windows Update regularly to get all critical patches, and maybe also check
out AdAware from www.lavasoft.de to scan for malware/spyware - make sure
they update it before running a scan.

Max,

They have a new 2004 addition CD and it will not install properly.
The computer is running so slowly that it would be impossible (in
terms of time) to do an upgrade off of the Internet.

Thank you,

Albert

In device manager, what seems to be hogging resources (both CPU and memory)?

Have they tried going into Safe Mode with networking? This should allow them
to run the Trend Micro online scan....
