I purchased a new computer with XP. I can not reinstall
due to the fact the product key is not valid. The tech
support from the retailer stated I needed to contact
Microsoft....

I am so fed up with MS.. WHY DOES MICROSOFT put out
products with so many "patches"?????

The "tech support from the retailer" is wrong. They, and not Microsoft,
have responsibility for providing technical support for a computer they
preinstalled Windows XP on.

If you purchased the Windows OS from a deal EOM (without
manuals) they are required to place a sticker with your
MS Windows serial number on your case.

If they did not do this, they could loose their right to
sell the Window OS.

Check your case on the outside or on the inside panel for
this sticker.

If it is not there, go the the dealer; make them call
Microsoft for you to have a new serial number applied.

No, this is far from correct. If you bought a computer with
Windows XP preinstalled, it's an OEM version, and Microsoft will
give you no help with OEM versions. The responsibility is that of
the OEM.

However, check the key you're trying to enter carefully, and make
sure you're entering it correctly. There are several characters
it's easy to mistake for others.

Take the computer back and tell the retailer it does not work and you want
your money back to go somewhere else where you can get customer service.
Screw these retailers who sell products and can not insure it works out of
the box. Just for information please post the retailers name.

Melanie,

Be very careful typing the product key, it is easy to misread some numbers
for letters at times.
If you purchased your new computer with an oem version of XP already
installed, then the support lies with the retailer , not with Microsoft.
Point this out to them, and demand they remedy your situation, and if they
still won't take down all their information and advise them you are sure MS
would like to hear about how they are not holding up to their agreement as
an OEM reseller. Never know, they may have even installed an illegitimate
copy on your machine.
