I am having a problem with a popup from microsoft telling me that Internet
Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. And close it does. On
4-1-09 my machine down loaded a number of XP updates and the problem
coinsided with these updates. Anyone else having a similar problem. Anyone
know which update might cause this problem. It is occuring regularly with my
computer and is a real nusiense. Thanks for any info. James

You might try running System Restore and roll back to a point before the
problem began. Go to Start->Help & Support and under Pick a task click on
System Restore. Use the wizard to revert back. If this is successful and
you've been returned to that earlier date then go to Control
Panel->Automatic Updates and select "Notify me but don't automatically
download...." When you get the pop up to update select the option for Custom
and select one hotfix to install. See if you can ferret out the problem.

Hello,

Try running IE with add-ons disabled

*** If you are running IE6: ***
Start > Control Panel > Internet Options > Advanced (tab) > UNCHECK "Enable
third-party browser extensions" > OK

Run IE6 now.

If it works now, one of your add-ons is causing the problem. Start Internet
Explorer as normal, Tools, Manage Add-ons, Enable or Disable Add-ons.

Disable all the add-ons. Enable third-party browser extensions in Internet
Options.

Restart your browser and enable the add-ons one by one till the problem
appears and you get the culprit.

*** If you are running IE7 ***
Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools >
Internet Explorer 7 (No Add-ons) to start without any add-ons. Try using the
browser and see if the same problem arises.

If the problem does not occur again, start IE7 normally, go to Tools >
Manage Add-ons and disable all the add-ons. Enable each add-on one at each
time and see if the problem occurs again. Once it occurs again after
enabling an add-on, you have nailed the culprit.

(if the menu bar does not appear, hit the Alt key on the keyboard)

Thank you two very much. I wish I had you knowledge, but, alas, I'm one of
the dummies. Thanks again very much. James

So, did you find an add-on that when disabled caused IE to behave and
when you enabled the add-on again IE started to misbehave again?

Are you running with that add-on disabled now and everything appears
normal?

Disabling an add-on may not really fix the problem, it just makes the
problem go away fixing only the syptom of the problem. What if it is
a useful add-on you like? Other people may be using it with no
problem and can help if you want to use the unknown add-on.

To really fix the problem you need to figure out why the add-on is
causing IE to fail, assuming the add-on is working properly.

What add-on was it? It may help somebody later.
