I know it is out there, but how come WI-XP sets a net up
in everyother operating system BUT 2000. How do you get
an XP machine to talk to a 2000 through a router? The net
installer that XP generates does not work in a 2000
system, so where is it? Thank you to whoever has found
this. Art

You need to install netbui on the xp machine. It can be
found on the xp cd. It worked for me.

I'm glad that NetBEUI worked for you, Ron. It's one way to set up a
network between XP and 2000, but it's not the only way. All versions
of Windows can network with each other through a router using TCP/IP
as the only network protocol. Since the router already uses TCP/IP
for Internet access, that's what I recommend.

Art, you can make the network settings manually without the XP net
installer:

1. Configure the TCP/IP protocol on 2000 to obtain an IP address
automatically, and set the workgroup name to MSHOME.

2. Make sure that XP's Internet Connection Firewall is disabled, as
shown here:

Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/ic_firewall.htm

3. Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP on both computers:

1. Open the Network Connections folder.
2. Right click the local area network connection and click Properties.
3. Double click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
4. Click Advanced.
5. Click WINS.
6. Click the Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP button.
