I was running win98 se. Ran fdisk. Ran format. Installed
windows xp home ed. from ms-dos. When the system boots,
I'm left with two options --- either boot win xp home ed.
or microsoft windows. Since there is only 1 partition on
the disk and since I didn't install multiple OS's, this is
puzzling. If I boot XP, I can't shut the computer off
without unplugging the power cord. If I choose starting in
windows, I get a blinking curser with no further activity.
However, I can shut the computer off with the power on/off
switch.

I've tried editing the boot.ini file.
When I type in bootcfg/? the machine doesn't recognize the
command.

Any help would be appreciated.

Does WinXP bootup Ok if selected? If so rt click MyComputer>select
Prop>Advanced>Startup and Recovery-Settings>Edit. Change the timeout=30
value to 1. Make sure that WinXP is in the Default OS window before doing
this.
