XP is very sensitive to mouse movement. If you hold the mouse button
down too long while copying and moving files, you can very easily end
up with duplicate files.
You can try adjusting the mouse sensitivity in Control Panel (classic
view)> Mouse. Or try a different method of moving/copying the files.
Method 1: use File> Edit> Copy (or cut) and File> Edit> Paste
Method 2: If you do not have Copy To and Move To buttons on the
standard toolbar, add them. Right click the toolbar and select
Cutomize. A new screen appears. In the left hand side of the window,
select the Copy To icon. Click the Add button to move it to the right
side. Repeat for the Move To icon. Click OK to dismiss this window.
Now in Explorer, select whatever files you want to move or copy. When
the selection is complete, click the Move To or Copy To button
(whichever applies). A new window appears, asking for the folder that
the files should moved to /copied to. Select the folder and click OK.
A nice feature with this method, is that the window asking where you
want to move files to will remember the last folder selected. If
sorting through a large number of loose files, this can be quite a
timesaver. Example: select 10 picture files and move them to My
Pictures. Select 10 more and when the location box appears, simply
click OK as My Pictures will already be selected.
Method 3: Practice your timing with the mouse button and selections to
avoid getting duplicates.
