Window Size

Still can not keep folder windows to the size I set them.
Please help before I reinstall 98, I had no problems there.
 
Hi Wes, I've tried a support attempt from HP who had me
go to Folder Options in Control Panel and 'Reset all
Folders' - didn't work. I tried closing from the File drop
down menu, closing with Ctrl Close and Shift Close - No
joy. I downloaded an edit from 'kellys-korner' but still
no way they do as I wish. There has to be some way.

As far as no problems with Windows 98, you mean just with folder view,
right? I finally managed to fix mine. I think. Maybe what you have to do is
open the folder, use the double headed arrow to drag the folder to the size you
want and then close with Ctrl + left click.
The following is from Ramesh Srinivasan, MVP:

View tab make sure that 'Remember each folder's view settings' is ticked.

However even with this setting ticked you'll wind up with unsaved settings.
The way to fix this problem is to open Regedit and go to the following
sub-folders:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\BagMRU]
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\Bags]

Right-click on each one (i.e. BagMRU and Bags) and select Delete to get rid of
both of them.

Reboot your PC and set up each of your folders as you like it. These
settings should now be saved and restored on the next reboot. By deleting the
registry entries above Windows is forced to recreate them and in doing so get

Method 2 : Courtesy: Kelly Theriot - MVP

Windows [XP] remembers 400 folder settings. When that number is reached some
settings aren't retained any longer. You can change this to 8000 by adding
this edit to the registry.

Run this edit, then reset your preferred folder options:

Increase Folder View Options Limit: (Line 2):
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

To use the Regedit: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it and
answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by right
clicking on the file and selecting Edit."""""

XP sure has some quirks! At least it doesn't crash all the time! :o)

So far, so good. I used Kelly's edit and it appears to be
working, except for when I , say, remove one folder from
another and then open it - it opens full screen again. I'm
leaving this for a couple of days because, previously, the
windows I opened frequently would stay as I'd set them.
Those I left alone for a day or two would reset themselves
to full size. Time will tell. Thanks for all the help so
far. (I'm still a tad wary about messing about in my
Registry )
