Hi,
I'm running 5728. When I use Windows Exployer I re-size the window
until it
almost covers my screen area, 22" Mitsubishi. I would like it to be this
size every
time I open it, but it always reverts to about a 4" x 6" window. I have
been to the
folder options and checked remember each folder's view setting but no joy.

Hi Doug--

Sometimes that won't work and in XP it had a limit of remembering 400 folder
settings--don't know if you've reached that number in 5728 yet, but anyway
try this.

The folder settings are rememberd by control from these registry keys:

They are discussed here (they aren't going to get around to updating and
designating which XP MSKBs apply to Vista until a good several months to a
year after Vista RTMs. I've had this communication a few times from the
Vista boys and girls. There are about 60 MSKBs that are Vista specific
right now.

My experience is that many XP tweaks do work on Vista because after
extensive investigation I discovered that the same company makes both
operating systems.

Your view settings or customizations for a folder are lost or incorrect

Try Kelly's (MSFT MVP of the year 2004 tweak that ups the folder settings
remevered there to 8000, or feel free to use the reg keys manually in the
MSKB linked above:

Increase Folder View Size Limit to 8000

Click this>apply>yes to accept>badda bing it should fix this. It's an
automatic reg change from Kelly Theriot MSFT MVP.

Good luck,

Thanks Chad,

I applied the second of your 2 choices ( Kelly's ) and that
appears to have done
the trick. I can't image having 400 folders that way already. Anyways it
sure saves doing
it each time I open exployer. By the way, I'm liking this Vista more and
more each day,
even more now that I have my Audigy 2 ZS Platium working again. Basically
running it
now as my main everyday OS.

Tx for the feedback. Enjoy. Try putting Vista through its features paces

I'm surprised that tweak was needed. Vista, as is also the case with SP2
in XP2, has a default of 5000 windows for that key.

Doug did you try dragging a window by the edges to get almost to full
screen, then from the classic menu bar close the window by File | Close?

No, I always closed the window from the x in upper left corner. This has
been like this ever since I clean installed Vista Beta 2. However I did
upgrade to RC1 and 5728.

Sorry, big boo boo, meant upper right corner. I still can't believe 400
windows, let alone 5000.

Rock--

The OP was specifically interested in Windows Explorer window size not
Internet Explorer 7 windows size in Vista 5728 (essentially the same OS that
they'll RTM half done in a few days).

The Bag MUR value is directed to Explorer and folders not IE.

If you want to get IE remembrance, first it's not going to be perfect.
Popunders behind the scenes that can get around any pop-up blocker, IE7's,
IE 6 SP2's, and Googles are any 3rd party can influence and change this.

If I want to have IE remember a Window Size, the best method is to open a
send window with Ctrl+N and stretch the child window ***manually**** to the
desired size. Then close it (doesn't matter from X on the ***right or from
File>close on left and hold down the Ctrl key while doing so.

Then I do the exact same thing with the parent window.

IIt's not full proof but it will keep your windows sized the way you want
but a popunder can change things.

That's IE. I was using the reg tweaks (as the MSKB points out) did you see
it--for Windows Explorer. While Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer are
tightly connected via code, these are two different problems with two
different solutions.

IE Window rememberance behaves differently than Explorer Window remebrance.

Whatever documentation you have for 5000 windows being remembered, please
bring it in here. Are you confusing IE windows and Explorer windows Rock?

Yep, my misthinking on the closing tip. It still is surprising that Kelly's
tweak was needed. Vista sets the BagMRU value to 5000 as does SP2 in XP.

I'm not challenging your 5000 figure but I asked for the link to the info
because I figured if I don't know it, it may be one more source.

Where are you getting the 5000 figure?

From the Vista registry itself.. Check out the registry key that is
modified with Kelly's tweak.
