Trying to set up a home network, between a desktop, hooked to a DSL
modem, via LAN cable, and a laptop with a wireless modem. The DSL modem has
a wireless connect. I keep getting an error, when I try to setup the
network. Both machines are using XP Home.
What Windows Services are needed (have to running), in order to setup a
home network /

Thanks

You don't need any more software. Instead, you must configure the DSL modem
to enable routing. You must configure the wireless modem to enable routing.
Then, you need to configure both the desktop and the laptop to join a
network. You use the Network Setup Wizard in conjunction with the Wireless
Network Setup Wizard to enable networking.
Help & Support is your friend.

That seems to be the problem, when I try to set up networking using the
Network Setup Wizard, I get the error message. I think the problem maybe
that some of the "Windows Services" are disabled.

Thanks

What does the error message say?
On reading further, I see that you have a wireless modem for your laptop.
It isn't clear to me what good such a device does. I installed a wireless
network adapter which connects via the airwaves to a wireless router
(actually the router also has 4 ethernet ports). I must say that it isn't
easy or simple to get all of the software to cooperate; I spent all
afternoon trying to get a printer shared. I suppose the next time I do
this, it will be much easier.

The laptop has a wireless modem or is wireless enabled?
Is the DSL modem a wireless router? If so it should have a "home page"
Can you log in to it from the desktop by typing its IP address into your
browser? e.g. 192.168.2.1
Make sure that DHCP is enabled on the DSL
Make sure that both PCs TCP/IP properties are set to "obtain an IP
address automatically" and they both have the same "Workgroup" name.
