Does anyone know what would make the window change from brighter to darker
and back, almost like it's pulsing, few times a day.

Is this my hard disk failing?

TIA.

It's about four or more years old; HP Pavilion mx90.

The monitor) also has a spot in the upper left hand corner , projecting out
about four inches, that looks like a circle with only a triangle shape
showing, (hard to describe) of very muted color, for about a year or so,
only visible on an empty screen. I don't know if there's any connection.

Is a graphics card something I can buy and just replace? Are they expensive
for HP/XPHome? Would it be more feasible to replace the monitor?

thanks,
san

I would suspect the monitor.

I'd put my money on it being the monitor. Given it's age it's most likely
just starting to give up.

Failing HDDs are not known to cause a monitor to act like a pulsar.. failing
monitors can act like a pulsar..

Be sure that the monitor cable is securely fastened at both ends. Rock it
gently, as you push it in.
