Hi All,

Question- Every time I use windows media to listen to music online, Windows
Defender pops up its little question mark to allow or block? In each of the
incidents the port # changes. By the time I am offline I can have up to 30+
allow or block, which in itself isnt the problem, the problem is why so many,
continuoulsy. The Win. Def reports are every minute until I stop
listening...its annoying. Any help would be appreciated!
Version- 1.1.1347.0/ Engine-1.1.1609.0/ Definition-1.14.1828.5

Thanks,

Try UNchecking, under "Real-time protection options", in Tools > Options,
"Choose if Windows Defender should notify you about:"
"Changes made to your computer by software that is permitted to run." (Save.)

I also recommend Stu's suggestion to upgrade to the latest Windows Defender.

I know your Windows Defender is out of date, but just for the record are you
using Windows Media Player 9, 10 or 11? Also, which particular Online store
are you using to play your music, e.g. MSN, Napster, URGE, Live 365. I'm
just a curious Cat!

I'm on WMP 11 now. Doing the URGE thing. I was just curious if the port
changes were indiginous to a particular service. You still have Windows
Media Guide in WMP 11 but URGE seems to be the best integrated media/online
store.

Hi Mr Cat,

The same port change warnings from Defender were happening to me with
Windows Media Player 10, and have never used Online stores, except MSN to
listen to radio stations (BTW, MSN, I noticed today, is not among the
choices. Where did it go?) Not using WMP much in total, I never tried to
stop the notices. They would occur, though, when I would play the radio from
a variety of station sites (NPR, BBC News, etc.). Event Viewer always had
logs about these port change warnings from Defender. It always seemed
innocent enough to me, though, but I don't know much about the machinations
of WMP and its ports. It seems that the notices are fewer, if not extinct,
with Defender Final, but I hadn't been consiously keeping track, either.
Today I went to my usual haunts, trying to force a notice, and have been
unable to get one.
