I am totally lost trying to figure this new Windows Explorer out. I am by no
means a newbie. This thing is making no sense to me at all. I also believe
that it is reporting drives (partitions) incorrectly. The search function is
totally non functional in my install (5384), can only run in Safe Mode. Just
MHO,

Jon

this might help.
in the lower corner of the left pane there is a click button to make the folder tree show. you can then drag the divider up to show your computer folder tree.

I will have to check that out as I totally missed it. I still don't get why
when I search on a known folder or file nothing comes back. Is the button
immeadiately to the right of the text box a "clear" button? There is a drop
down to the right of that that lets you choose between This Computer and The
Internet. I am thinking you are supposed to click the appropriate one to
initiate the search. I have noticed on my installation, dual boot enviornment
using the second partition for Vista, that the drive letters between the C:
and D: drives gets swapped in Vista so that Vista reports C: when it is
really D: . Still not sure why they made such radical changes to Windows
Explorer. I did find that right clicking the new Start/Windows Logo still
gives you a context menu with Explore as a choice and that works somewhat
normally. Thanks for you tip Mikehsd

I am looking but the only button on the left side I have is directly below
the Back/Forward buttons and that is not bringing up the folder tree. Is it
because so far I can only boot to safe mode? IE 7 is working and I can browse
the internet. I don't get why when I enter E:\downloads in the search box it
is not finding it as I know it exists.

I am using Vista Ultimate edition 64 bit.
with Windows Explorer on screen, at the bottom of the LEFT pane should be the word FOLDER.
click on it and your folder tree should show. you can then use the horizontal divider to expand the folders.

Hi mikeyhsd,
I still am not seeing the folders button that you see. I am also using X64
Ultimate build 5384. So far I can only get safe mode up. I seem to have a
video problem with my ATI Radeon X1600 which if you look many people are
having the same problem. Maybe the button you are talking about is not
available in safe mode. I did discover I can use ALT + Up Key to manually
navigate up to what I would call old My Computer view and then double click
the drive I need. What happened to the Up button in the old Windows Explorer?
I had to go in the View menu and drill down to find this. I hope it's a lot
better in normal mode!

Update:
Yes it's better in normal mode and I found the folders button. That works
nice. Thanks.

Jon i'm totally with you on this one , even when I'm looking for stuff on my
drives is there search returns nothing

Hi,
I was limited to safe mode when I was having the problem. Once I got into
normal mode I found the search worked a lot better. I also found you can
still right click My Computer as before and get windows explorer as before.

Count me in as well. I've been toiling with simple text string search for a
few days and cannot get the search facility to work. It finds files who's
finename matches the search string but not any files where the string is
contained within them. I've tried indexed, non-indexed, search in file and
all the other search options I could find, to no avail.

Live Search may have some advantages for some folks but for a
straight-forward and ease of use capability, give me the old XP Dead Search
capability.

fwiw, the files I'm searching are most CSS file, i.e., *.css which contain
only text.
