Windows XP Window does not appear on toolbar when minimised

Hi All,
I am having a problem with windows XP. When I minimise a window it does not appear on the toolbar at the bottom of the screen. If I need the window again I have to go to the desktop and open the application again. Can anyone help, all suggestions greatly appreciated
