After installing service pack 1, my computer seems to take forever to
install new updates and takes up to 5 minutes to shut down. Any ideas?

I guess I could tell you everything that is happening, huh?

This is a fresh and clean install of Windows XP Pro and Service pack 1

OK, after the update, not only is windows update really slow, it loads the
update, but taked forever to install it. It seems to sit there while it
does, whatever it is doing, and after thinking about it, will install almost
imediately. User switching and logging off go OK, till I get the display
message, "Saving Settings" This is where it takes a long time. All users,
even the guest account.

I checked the registry for anything in the "Run" command that shouldn't be
there, and ran msconfig to disable items in that list too. No effect.

I have disabled indexing service through Windows and SMARTDRIVE in system
BIOS. Running Spybot and Adaware found nothing, No Viruses or anything
goofy when running Norton systemworks and antivirus.

I will be willing to send my registry if needed.

See? I have learned a lot in this roup, but this one is baffling.

Hi Kelly.

Sorry, that didn't help, but I did do something kind of drastic to resolve
the problem.

In the installation I used originally, I used the "Quick format" option and
a lot of things went wrong. For instance, all of my file attributes were
set to read only, and I couldn't get them changed. Installing software back
on the system gave me messages that I either didn't have the rights to
complete the installation, or that the C drive could not be read.

After formatting and trying a "Proper" installation, I have installed all of
critical updates except service pack 1. I am kind of wary regarding doing
so, since that has the opportunity of putting me right where I started.
Service pack 1a seems to be a little more difficult to find. Can you (or
anyone) point me in the right direction?
