Windoctor cannot identify operating system

For about one week now when I try to run windoctor I get
the following message and the program terminates:

"Unable to correctly identify the version of this
operating system due to another application hooking and
modifying the win32 version function. Cannot identify
the version."

It is possible that this problem started after an
automatic windows XP update on July 18 or 19th. All was
well before then.

What do I do now?

.
Scan for viruses, try a system restore back before this
issue, or run system file checker tool, click the start,
run, then type in; " sfc /scannow " with that space after
sfc, and it asks for your XP CD to copy any needed files.
