Deleting some .exe files with pornographic names required going to the
DOS prompt when an attempt to do so in Windows Explorer was blocked.
Some file names were BritneySpears1.exe, BritneySpears2.exe and so
forth.

After the deletions Windows ran the hard drive nearly continuously and
a pop-up claimed there is a "MOUSE" statement in autoexec.bat that
requires DOS compatibility mode to reduce page swapping. There is no
such statement in autoexec.bat.

The computer has been running without an antivirus program and without
a firewall.

Has anyone seen this virus?

We've got all the right tools and knowlege for virus, worm, adware,
spyware, etc., removal. I was hoping for a response from someone who
is familiar with the described problem.

But not the right tools or knowledge for prevention !

Sounds like it's time for a full re-install - wipe the drive and start
again!

And this time, USE THE RIGHT PREVENTATIVE TOOLS!!!!

The problem is someone using a computer without an anti-virus and without a
firewall.
Severe case of PBKAC

it's generally not possible to diagnose a virus problem by symptoms or
filenames alone... if you think you have a virus, scan your drive... if
you think you have a virus your scanner doesn't detect, try a different
scanner or send a suspect file to your anti-virus developer for analysis...
