I have an existing network which uses all win98 machines
connected to a gateway router to share an internet
connection. It uses fixed IP addresses and IPX/SPX.
All the 98 machines only use bindings to IPX/SPX.
This works fine.

I tried to add a new xp machine and have had no luck
so far in getting it and the network to recognize each
other.

I initially had a disaster with one of the 98 machines when
I ran the xp's Network Setup Wizard on it. It ceased talking
to any other machine. I fixed it and knew better than to
trust the wizard anymore.

I manually configured the xp for a fixed IP address, killed
the firewall, added NW Link IPX/SPX, and removed
the bindings for Client + File&PrinterSharing from
TCP/IP. There is no domain, the xp name is unique,
and the workgroup name is correct.

The xp can ping all the other machines and the router.
One 98 machine can ping the xp (haven't tried from the
others). The xp can access the internet.

All the 98's show up in Network Neighborhood, but
not the xp. None of the 98's show up in the xp's Network
Places.

What did I miss?
Any help will be gratefully accepted.

TIA,

uninstall the ipx protocol and just use tcp on your network.

Since file sharing uses IPX and you've un-bound sharing from TCP/IP,
there must be a problem with the XP computer's IPX settings.

Right click the XP network connection and click Properties. Make sure
that both "NWLink NetBIOS" and "NWLink IPX/SPX/NetBIOS Compatible
Transport Protocol" are enabled.

Click the second one and click Properties. Set the network number and
frame type to be compatible with the equivalent settings on the 98
computers. If the frame type is being automatically detected, it
might help to specify the same explicit frame type on all computers.

Thanks Steve. Your response hit on most of the solution.
I needed to specify the frame type and network number on
all the machines, (auto didn't work) and bind the xp's Client for
MSN to TCP/IP. Additionally, on the xp's IPX/SPX I had
confused the network number with the internal network number.
Works fine now.
