Win98SE CD serial no recovery

I have 3 computers, 2 Win98SE disks. My laptop has Win98SE loaded from the
computer store's disk, and I do not have the serial No.

I cannot install hardware drivers from my CD, maybe it is because the
serial no's dont match. Is this a possibility?

I would like to determine the seriol no of one of my CD's (or from one of
my desktops) and change the serial no on the laptop to that of one of my
disks.

I once saw a prog that could recover (and changs??) the serial nos. Any
thoughts on where to get it? Thanks

you can get your windows product ID by going to Start/run/regedit/edit/find and
then type in productkey and it will find it for you. hope this helps.

I see that elsewhere in this thread you got answers for changing the serial
number in the registry. However, I am convinced it is an entirely independent
matter from the problem you mention. My experience is that Windows 95 and 98
have never cared which number I had in my registry, and which CD I used for
installing drivers. I've always been random, about which CD I pick up, as
well as which number I enter in.

What the nature of the problem is that you are experiencing, as far as not
being able to install drivers, I am not offering any speculation. I expect
you will need to go to a Windows help group and post some details....

Most correct. I've used the serial # from my laptop CD to install Win98 on
another computer.

Get Windows 9x Product Key from Registry, with option to print. The
Product Key is needed for a reinstall of Win9x, and will be on your
Windows Setup CD case or Windows manual, but what if you lose it?

Right! It was all due BG's discovery of private individuals attempting to
make their systems function, his learning that some were engaging in such
flagrant offenses as not caring which of our CDs we put in our computers.
He had no choice but to take increasingly hostile action against us. Why
should he concern himself with the 95-99% piracy rate in major countries
(China, Ukraine, etc), or US corporations who license one CD for a thousand
seats, or any large-scale financial loss? When his enemy is right here, in
the quiet homes: his customers who dare to install drivers on their laptop,
without first consulting Redmond for permission? We engaged in no piracy, but
instead, far worse - we exhibited signs of functional independence with /his/
operating system. Must be thwarted! General BG decides thus, in this battle
against such village rebels, the time has arrived to call forth the merciless
Forces of Product Activation.

Do either of your CD's have 'For Distribution Only with a New PC' printed on
the CD? Also, is it definitely the SE version on your laptop?

If you have original Microsoft CD's (not OEM versions) they will not be
usable with an OEM installation. Similarly trying to update a Win98
Installation with Win98SE won't work.

Maybe there were also different OEM versions of Win98(SE) which prevents the
update.

Yes. I'm sorry. I had to do that with XP.
But I still have 98 on 2 other ones machines laying around. I'll just have
to purchase a site license. Nah. :)
