I recently had a problem where most of my embedded links would only bring up a
transparent window whether in an e-mail or on a web page.

I found the source of the problem and the solution and figure that it will
become quite common in the future for those of us using Windows 98 or earlier.

Microsoft has updated three or four dlls (oleaut32.dll is one of them) for XP.
Unfortunately they do not perform well in 98. The solution is to do a search
for the file MCREPAIR.EXE, run it and when it ask to replace the newer file on
your hard drive tell it YES.

You can get MCREPAIR from Microsoft's site.

If this is off topic I apologize.

OT but since you brought it up, here's some background that
indicates it has been a problem since 2001:

This does fix it in some cases, and in others you have to do more
work, seems to depend on what the cause was. Many times replacing
the oleaut32.dll does not work or the problem soon returns.

I do agree that this was a 1st grade error on MS's part, when they
are now at least in Middle School...

There's currently an "RPC stub" problem epidemic. Microsoft made a version
of the OLEAUT32.DLL (version 3.50) that is incompatible with Windows 98.
Big mistake by Microsoft (considering all the flack they take about "DLL
Hell"). The incompatible version comes with the version that ships with
Windows XP.

The problem is that some setup programs are (erroneously) including this
DLL. So when the setup program detects that you are running an older
version (usually 2.40) of the DLL, it replaces it with the Windows XP
version.

This will replace 3.50 DLLs from XP with older versions compatible with
Windows 98 (2.40.4515)

NOTE TO ALL INSTALL DEVELOPERS: DO NOT INCLUDE THE WINDOWS XP VERSION OF
OLEAUT32.DLL, OLEPRO32.DLL, ASYCFILT.DLL and STDOLE2.TLB IN YOUR SETUP. You
are killing systems everywhere.

The culprit file was oleaut32.dll in my win\system directory.
Getting back the correct version not only solved my install-problems,
but also corrected my audio-visual problems. It also solved a
problem with my winrar program, which hadn't been working right for
the past week.

I would NEVER have thought of looking at the oleaut32.dll file.

For the duration of Swen, my address is inoperative.

OT it might be, but it solved a couple of serious problems for me. I just
didn't imagine it was my trusty W98 that was causing my trouble.
Thanks for the advice.
