I am looking for a software product that will make a windows 98
machine harder to get into by enforcing user logons and passwords..
Something to block people from logging on by passing the startup
screen or adding another user. Nothing to stop an all out hacker
attack just enough to stop office cleaners from turning on computers
and using them after hours.

thanks

Set up a bios password.

Set to boot only from hard drive.

Sorted.

Regards,

I tried that and it works okay on a most pc's but I have 2 which seem
very flaky with the bios password. Half the time it won't accept the
password (yes I have checked the spelling) . There seems to be no
rhyme or reason to it so I can't really leave it if it is going to be
unreliable so I was looking for an different solution for the couple
of flaky ones.

thanks though

Use GAG:

I know it primary purpose is to be a partition boot manager but you can
also set up passwords for each boot partition, in your case, just one.

This will work very well. Disable any other boot devices in the bios or
at least put them after the main boot hard drive.

OR

You may use Winsecure-IT. This will start when Windows does but can be
defeated by holding the F8 key during start up. GAG can not be defeated
in this way.

"Welcome to PC Restrictor! PC Restrictor is designed to quickly give
an administrator a high level of control over personal computers
running the Windows 95/98 operating system. PC Restrictor allows an
administrator to enable or disable specific areas of functionality
within the OS. The structure of the program is a wizard that walks the
administrator through several screens to configure the security
settings. Below is a list of the categories that PC Restrictor
addresses. To learn more about a category click its link below.

Login Screen
Network Settings
DOS Settings
Applications Allowed to Run
Start Menu Items
Desktop Settings
Active Desktop Settings
System Properties
Reboot

Please understand that the Windows 95 and Windows 98 operating systems
are not designed for security! PC Restrictor's security can easily be
defeated by a highly experienced user. This is due to the design of
the operating system, NOT problems with PC Restrictor. The reason this
is mentioned here is so that unreasonable faith is not placed in the
security measures provided by PC Restrictor. If you desire a highly
secure operating system look into Linux, Unix, Windows NT, or Windows
2000. Windows ME is based off of the same design as Windows 95/98 and
therefore will also be prone to security vulnerabilities..."

Good idea - and there are a number of boot managers that have some
degree of password protection built in.
The one I use is XOSL - though I don't use the password features, so I
can't tell you whether it's possible for someone to get into the setup
routine and monkey about with the settings.
I know for sure it can prompt for a password before booting - it would
seem logical to have an option to ask for that password before
entering the setup.

What are you scanning with, some freeware AVG garbage!
I just downloaded it & scanned with NAV, no problems.
I just posted it to binaries.

no I am using paid version of AVG crap - I will try a few other
scanners first to ease my mind before I open it though.

Thanks

Here's an honest piece of Windows software, heh, heh.

Just saw a mention on Cringley's InfoWorld column that some company
was having problems installing the Microsoft CRM product. Finally a
Microsoft tech admitted the CRM system has problems running on a
system intended to be secure. To which Cringeley said, "Secure system
- hello? This is a Microsoft product!"

I used to quite like LockIt v3.5.2 on my old W98SE.
