Win98 pc can't open file on WinXP pc until XP user opens and saves file.

When a Win98 pc tries to open a file in a shared folder
on a WinXP pc, it receives the message "file is read-
only" and it does not open. When trying to copy the file
in Explorer the message is "Access Denied".

The WinXP pc has the shared folder permissions set to
full control for the Everyone user. It does not matter
which user name the Win98 pc logs in as (even the
administrator name and password of the WinXP pc).

*** The curious thing is that when the WinXP user opens
the file and saves the file, the Win98 user can then
access the file normally (open, save, copy, etc.). ***

There is no such problem accessing the WinXP pc from
another WinXP pc.

This problem has just started over the past month or two,
so I suspect it is from a recent WinXP security update.

Let me know if you have something for me to try.

I have a very similar problem, in that my host Win98SE box
cannot see either of the XP clients. The XPs can see the
host and each other, share files all around as well as
access the 'net (via ICS on the Win98 machine.)

The 98 Host sucessfully pings both XPs, and Computer
Browsing is enabled in Sevices on both XPs.

I'm really stumped!

I've recently run into a similar situation. But not quite the same. A client
replaced the desktop computer in the office. I transferred over the needed
files to the new machine, and set it up with the same settings on the
network, and shared the files out. They were able to access the files on the
new machine just fine. But if they create any new files on the new desktop
computer and save them, when they try to access them from the laptop access
is denied. In this case both computers are running Windows XP. I created and
saved a file on that share with the laptop, and the desktop could open it
just fine. This seems very similar to the problem you are having, just
slightly reversed. This started before Thanksgiving, and I have been
searching for a solution ever since. If you have come up with any kind of
solution to your problem, please do tell.

I finally resolved my issue, so I thought I would pass the info along. When
I originally ran into this problem, I had tried to share My Documents across
the network. When I ran into the permission issue, I thought that might have
been a problem, so I created a new folder and moved the documents to that
folder to share. Same problem, but eventually I realized that the folder I
was sharing was on the Desktop, so it was still under the Documents and
Settings directory. So I created a new directory in the root of the drive
and shared it. No problems since. So my question to you, Dave, is, the
folder you are sharing, is it somewhere under the Documents and Settings
directory?

and Settings folder. Actually it is on a Zip drive (E:)
that is shared as "E". I have also tried creating the
shared folder in the root of C: with the same puzzling
results. If the file is just copied to the ZIP drive,
network users cannot access the file. But if the user
sharing the ZIP drive opens and saves a file, then
everyone can access the file fine. These shares used to
work fine, but about a month or two ago it just stopped
working on all of our XP shares. I have no problem
accessing any of the files from another XP computer -
just from the 98SE computers.
