Hi all,
I have a problem thats driving me mad. I have read taht Win98SE has
TCP/IP stack issues but none of the "expert" solutions available via
Google have solved the problem yet.
I have a small home network setup with my desktop running Win98SE, a
laptop running XP and occasionally a laptop running Win2K. Everything
runs through a Siemens Gigaset105 router (its WLAN but Im only using the
ethernet ports) to my broadband modem.
Generally the network works fine, but both the XP and the Win98 machine
sporadically lose contact with the router - No Ping (timeout), no
routing, nothing. The XP machine loses contact after about 30 mins and
regains contact after a certain time. The Win98 machine loses contact
after a random time period which can be seconds or an hour or two and
needs rebooting before it will regain contact to the router.
My suspicion that the router was defect was apparently nixed by the fact
that at the weekend the Win98 machine lost contact but I was able to
ping the router and surf via the Win2k laptop at the same time. I havent
noticed network breakdowns using the Win2k machine but its not attached
to the Network for long periods.
The Win98 machine has been nuked and rebuilt recently with no noticeable
improvement. I have installed all the online updates via "Windows
update" including IE 6 and the 1.4 dialin update. I use Mozilla as my
main client.
The network only has TCP/IP installed with dynamic IP and DCHP. Windows
client and Filesharing is installed. VPN was installed as standard at
the rebuild. The XP machine is set up similarly.
Any suggestions as to what I can change to stop the breakups? Could it
be the router after all?
TIA
