Dear All,

Hope you can help with this problem:

We run 5 Win98 machines on a peer to peer network and are
trying to use a win2000 Pro machine to act as a file
server. All machines use static IP's and most of the day
seem to work OK....

Then for example, opening a word document takes ages on
one machine and then the other win98 machines have similar
problems.
Another example may be windows address book taking several
minutes to open, showing a blank address book and finding
that it has created a copy of the address book on the
server with part of the original wab name.

Re-booting the win98 machine seems to get things going for
a while again and the server never seems to report any
problems and always has plenty of resources available.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

They are all in the same workgroup and all useraccounts exist on the W2K,
right?
Post the ipconfig/all.

Do you also have an internetconnection somewhere, and if yes, how is that
configured?

Marina

Hi Duncan,

Has this ADSL-connection a router? Is it able to do DHCP-serving?
Sorry, haven't got that message from Jake anymore, so I can't confirm.

Marina

Dear Marina,

Can I ask what this is leading to and what it has to do
whit the initial problem?

Kind Regards Duncan

If it has the ability, then it can push all the necessary setting to your
computers attached to it.
Right now there is no gateway on any computer.
How about a fresh ipconfig/all from all computers?

Marina

Dear Marina,

Not sure what this has to do with tracking down the cause
and solution to the problem I have.
I need to use static IP addresses on the network for a
number of reasons including specific hardware devices. As
far as the gateway is concerned, I have set the IP today
and have internet access on the client machines but the
problem persists. I think the best solution would be the
identification of the issue and a subsequent fix.

before all my hair falls out! :)

Kind Regards Duncan
