Win98 Defrag

Hi

Does anyone know of a good freeware defrag utility for Windows 98 to replace
the not-so-good Microsoft utility that comes with it.

replace your DEFRAG.EXE with the DEFRAG.EXE of 209 kb of windows ME
runs like a charm

I just downloaded this one as I was well impressed with index dat from
those folks and it's another cracker.

I thought it was calling my ME defragger which I've been using for ages on
w98se, so I finally had a look at the instructions ;o) and found the prog
even provides the ME defragger and replaces the old one.

But it's also now a nice one click prog, all the shutting down dealt with
for me ( though the icons stayed on the task bar), and the defrag was
really rapid, but I am a fairly good boy and do a clean and defrag weekly.

(If only I could get round to hoovering that often)

ScanDefrag 4.2a will help the standard Win 98 - or the better Win ME -
Defrag utility run better. (Try "restrictive mode.")

"ScanDefrag is a small windows application that configures Microsoft's or
Norton's disk utilities as part of the next Windows' startup process. This
can result in less restarts and cleaner runs of these programs."

I was originally sent a copy by it's developer (George Gedye) a few months
ago and after using it, prefer it to any of the other third party program's
I've tried.

Does the program work with Win XP?

It is meant for 9x systems mainly, however, I've been told that it works
with XP aswell (just don't quote me on that as I don't have XP so can't
confirm it either way)

I agree. Diskeeper Lite is great. It is what I run and recommend.

Not sure speaking the same soft/version about
but I have tried diskeeper lite one or two years ago
and said myself never more. Why ?

1) Huge 10MB ( or so ) size, doing much less then a soft of its
size can do.
2) Ugly nagware
3) Refusing to defrag with free space under 20%
4) Its colorful defrag screen is a big theatre, but
seems quick run a sort of file unfragment only ( if even )
5) Persuades me to do it at least once every day - gain of doing it
is much less than additional effort and disc stress
6) Windows Defrag has a lot of work to done after Diskeeper claimed
to be finished.
7) Presented concept of company philosophy is not too far from my idea
about scientologists, as they are said to be.

So it is fast as the wind. But I think
"defrag /U" does the same.

I recommend the WinME version of Defrag...after you use EndItAll,
scandisk, and Easy Cleaner....in that order.
