Where do I find the win95 game "hearts"? It's not (as such) on the win95
installation cd I have from eons ago, though it somehow was on the win95
installation itself, and it certainly doesn't come with win2k.

I'm having a hard time locating it on the microsoft site.

Thanks.

Looks like the only way to get it from microsoft is to download the whole
bloody card game set.
i don't think it's the version that came with win95

Go to your Win95 installation and copy the following files to a floppy
disk:

cards.dll
mshearts.exe
mshearts.ico
mshearts.hlp

Copy these files from the floppy to a new folder on your Win2000
machine. Then setup a desktop or start list shortcut to mshearts.exe.

If you no longer have access to your Win95 installation you can
expand these files manually from the Win95 CD.

I tried looking for it already, but didn't find it until now: I forgot to
look for the .cab files. They're in the win95 directory on the win95 cd.

So I did a "strings -f *.cab | fgrep mshearts" and found them on cab 7 and
8.

Thanks for the heads up on the cards.dll. The cards.dll that comes with
win2k will not work with it. Is that because the win2k
c:/system32/cards.dll is a 32 bit version of it?

Thanks again!

After upgrading our network and our pcs to W2K we were
devastated to also discover the loss of hearts. Our
solution has been to go to yahoo games and create a
private table there, or play with other folks. its free
and works fine on dial up internet.

It's on the win95 installation cd, as I posted earlier on. "Rick" helped me
by telling me the files needed.

You'll find them in the .cab files in the win95 directory on the cd:

d:\win95\(forget)#.cab

You'll need #07 and #08

Use winzip to extract.

cards.dll
mshearts.exe
mshearts.ico
mshearts.hlp

NOTE, though, the help will not work unless you double click on the .hlp
file directly. Not sure why---did help facilities change from win95 to
win2k, and/or do they need to be placed in a "special" directory?

No, the Win2K cards.dll is for a completely different purpose -- do
not
delete or overwrite it. Simply expand/copy the Win95 cards.dll into
the
same folder as the other Hearts files.

Rick

Works perfectly, thanks. With one minor exception:

Asking for help within the game does not work. I have to double click on
the .hlp file.

Strange.. Help works fine from within the game on both of my
Win2K systems (one is at Service Pack 4, the other at SP3).
Do you get any kind of error message?

I also have something strange: when starting hearts, I cannot choose how to
play: being the dealer or joining another game; I can only play with the
computer as opponent, not with other users in my network.
Is this "by design" on w2k?

Don't know if it was by design or not, but I've never tried to get
network play to work. Anyone else?

I did a little searching and found MSHearts appears to use the
Netbeui network protocol. It's possible to install this protocol
under Win2k but it's not recommended, because it generates
quite a bit of network traffic.

First "This is not a windows help file", with [ok] button.

Then "A newer version of help is needed to read this file", with [ok]
button.

I can double click the .hlp file just fine though.

Sounds like your file association for .hlp files somehow got changed
from the 32-bit version (winhlp32.exe) to the 16-bit version
(winhelp.exe). Change it back via My Computer or Explorer/
Tools/View/File Types/highlight HLP/Advanced/highlight open/
Edit/enter C:\WINNT\System32\winhlp32.exe %1
