Hi all,

I have a Win2K machine running SP4, in my small home network with fixed
IPs, local profiles, and a linux box just providing NAT and some file
storage space.

This one computer keeps getting a corrupt profile, every 2-3 reboots
windows restarts and complains the profile is dead. It renames it .bak
and i have to create a new profile and copy all across - im getting
quite quick at it now! Its a relatively fresh install, about a week
old, and didnt seem to have any problems at first. Its had some odds
and sods of software loaded -video editing etc but nothing had been
altered durign the session before the first corruption occurance,
except maybe a hotfix installation i dont know of?

Any help greatly appreciated, its taking all my time to keep fixing
this, its driving me mad!

Does the same thing happen in Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking?

How do you create new profile?

Are the profile names generated randomly?

Cheers Dave,

I get
http://www.j.buckle.btinternet.co.uk/fault1.jpg
http://www.j.buckle.btinternet.co.uk/fault2.jpg
http://www.j.buckle.btinternet.co.uk/fault3.jpg
http://www.j.buckle.btinternet.co.uk/fault4.jpg
http://www.j.buckle.btinternet.co.uk/fault5.jpg

Fault1.jpg shows the event log of the last good session - showing the
errors leading up to the shutdown. The errors themselves are contained
in fault2-5.

I cant tell if its a drive/controller failure or a software failure but
it has done this twice now since the last post and the last time
appears to have taken windows out entirely - BSOD and "hive" errors?

Thanks
James

Check Event Viewer for errors.

It could be drive and or controller failure. You should be able to download
a disk diagnostic utility from the drive manufacturer's web site.

I cant run their diagnostic software on my computer or the other SATA
capable one i i have as both use chipsets that the diag software doesnt
support. However running the drive on the second PC (though not as a
main windows drive) does not report any events/errors. I have managed
to fix some file system errors that it had since the failures.

I'm guessing it might be the original motherboard but im not sure and
since I cant run it as the boot drive on my second PC (OS dead) i cant
figure out if it only throws errors when used as the main drive.

I'll re-install windows on that drive and see if the errors continue.
How frustrating.

Thanks again,

J

Still no cure for this, and its happening with increasing regularity.
Tried the drive on another PC and it seems fine, but the MB also seems
fine so im totally confused :( This happens even on a fresh windows
installation with no other software loaded.

I"m "suffering" a similar problem - loosing the administrator profile and an
user profile. Problems started after I started using an SATA drive with W2K
(the first load booted twice then I got a message that the registry was lost
and I had to re-load).
Does anyone know of a problem with W2K OS & SATA controllers or more
specifically Promise controllers? I've not had problems with the SATA drive
on which I have XP Pro loaded - only the drive with W2K.
(I dont' have both drives connected at the same time - I connect only the
drive with the OS that I wish to boot from.)

I switched to XP on this machine and it seems to have reduced the
errors but still has some random drive faults while the sata is plugged
in.

With my system, the "temporary" profile was generated using the name of the
corrupt profile followed by the name of the computer
(administrator.compname). I modified it so it was saved, the next day it
failed again and generated a profile named "administrator.compname.000". As
this continues to happen (aproxmately 12 times in less than a week), I'm
going to return to using the ATA100 drive for W2K as the SATA (or it's
drivers) seem to be incompatible with W2K. (I've had various problems using
an SATA storage drive with W2K loaded on an ATA100 drive so I'm assuming that
W2K & SATA have compatibility issued that aren't being addressed by either
side.)
