Hello,

I have replaced my NT4 Server box with a new hardware and Windows 2000
Server (SP3). I have a about 18 client machines running XP Pro/2000 Pro/NT
4 WS/Win 98.

A peculiar thing is happening. Our domain is called "twin" and all the
clients have various mapping to other clients within our "twin" domain. So
the problem is this;

Frequently the WinXP/Win2K clients loose the ability to browse the "twin"
network through the explorer (My network places/Microsoft Windows
Network/Twin) interface- they get "twin not accessible....", however, they
can still utilize any pre-existing drive mappings, including access to the
server and/or client machines.

If I go through the 4 steps of "ipconfig" using the following parameters
---> /release /flushdns /renew /registerdns <---
then I get access again. But at some point, it gets locked out again.

(I am not sure if this occurs on NT/98 as those machines are not really used
day to day)

Any ideas/suggestions?

Thanks in advance,
Glenn

How many nics in the server? Are all W2K/XP/NT's at least patched with the
ms03-039?
Have you installed WINS on the server (W9x/NT4 need it)?

Marina

Hi and thanks,

There are 2 NICS on the server, but one (PCI) is disabled. The builit in
NIC is the only active network card with any settings associated with it.

All workstations have been pactched with MS03-039 security update and WINS
is active.

Any further suggestions?

Regards,
Glenn

Does the ipconfig/all from the clients show that all is pointing to your
server-IP?
Got options 003, 006, 015, 044 and 046(0x8) set in DHCP-server?

Marina

Hi Marina,

(1) Yes all the clients do show the server IP address of the server
(2) No, nothing is 'checked off" in 'available options' for DHCP server. I
have subsequently set the options you note below and will see what happens.
I wonder why some workstations of the same 'flavor' would experience this
problems while others wouldn't. Anyway if this works I will ignore why and
just be happy. :)

Thanks,
Glenn

Hi Glenn,

Did you restart DHCP-server after setting those options?
Are you using RRAS as well?
DNS on your servernic is pointing to the server-IP, right?
