win2kpro win't shut down

After downloading and installing the latest round of
upgrades, win2kpro won't shut down. Due to the urgency of
getting ready for a software training issue, I made the
classic mistake of downloading all that was available and
pertinent.

Now when I shut down, the op system does its shutdown but
the Laptop (inspiron 4000) is left with a blank screen and
a non-blinking bar cursor on the display and no power
down. Holding the power switch in will make it power down.

Anybody have any ideas?
