After 2 years of near flawless running, my wonderful robust Win 2000
Pro is being brought to its knees by a bunch of tweaking by yours
truly, nasty programs that yank or override .dll files, bugs, wile
worms, and installing and uninstalling a couple hundred, or was it
thousands, programs. So I am preparing to start from scratch. I will
make a complete copy of the contents of drive C unto an external
FireWire drive. I will reformat and install cleanly.

I have the original programs, keys, etc. But I don't remember how I
set up certain things. For instance, how can I store the information
about the LinkSys wireless network, so that I can replicate the
settings, without having to sweat bullets again? Or have my son
threaten me with bodily harm when he can't hitch a ride with his XBox
Live.

I have been dreading and putting off this for so long that my system
is really started to take a beating now. I can't postpone the
inevitable much longer.

I sure would appreciate some pointers from folks who have gone through
this before.

Best,

Andrew

One quite simple way to record settings is to simply display them and
then "print screen". In W2k a [ctl-printscreen] puts the screen image on
the clipboard; it can then be pasted in a Word file and printed in the
usual way. I find this helpful also because the context of the settings
- where they appear - is captured as well and this helps me remember how
they were set in the first place. Nothing clever or abstract about this
approach, though it does take some time.

The resulting document is also handy when a wandering asteroid takes out
your machine (but not your file cabinet. :-)

Thanks, Dan. I was doing exactly what you suggested (great minds...).
I was hoping there is some more elegant way that I wasn't aware of to
do the same thing.

Appreciate the cogent response.

Best,

Andrew
