Computer 1:
Name Rambo
IP 192.168.20.1
OS win xp pro

Computer 2:
Name Indiana
IP 192.168.20.2
OS win 2000 pro

Computer 3:
Name Malediction
IP 192.168.20.3
OS win xp pro

Workgroup is DEATHWISH, subnet mask 255.255.255.0
Netbios over tcp/ip enabled
NO FIREWALLS ARE INSTALLED ON ANY MACHINE
All machines are connected to a hub

Each machine can successfully ping itself by name and ip
addy, but ALL pings from one machine to another time out.

NOT a hardware issue, as the hub has been working for a
year on another network, and all lights (hub and net cards)
are ON (no traffic, though).
Also, indiana can see rambo listed when searching for
computer on the network- but CAN'T ping it, connect to it
("network path not found" error) or malediction, the other
xp pro machine.

Malediction was previously working fine on a different
network, for approximately a year.

Rambo is a clean, new install of xp pro.

To summise, nothing seems to work (searching, mapping
network drives etc), and if it wasn't for the fact that the
hardware is clearly working and indiana can (kind of) see
rambo we'd just assume someone had cut all the cables...

Does anyone have any suggestions about how to fix this problem?

Hi Alistair.

I gather one one the machines is connected to the net?

The best way to configure the tcp/ip properties of the
machines is to enable internet connection sharing on the
machine with the net connection

right click the IE icon on the desktop
properties
connections
settings
advanced
then enable internet connection sharing

on the other 2 machines select
obtain ip address automatically in the tcp ip properties.

when ics is enables it acts as a kind of dhcp server and
this will allow all machines to communicate with each
other and have internet access

hope this helps

Hey Alistair,

Try this yet? Reinstall Client for Microsoft Windows (the
Service), NETBeui (protocol), and TCP/IP (protocol). If
you require the IPX/SPX protocol, then reinstall that one
also. You had said, one or more of these computers was
previously used in another network for a year, that is why
I suspect corrupted network config. For starters, just try
this then we'll move on. Let me know if you need
assistance in reinstalling network components.

Have tried all above suggestions, with no success
whatsoever. Any other ideas, guys?

Thanks for your help people. got the problem fixed now.
Set the NIC's to run 10baseT half-duplex and works fine.
We were using 10m lengths of cable salvaged from the
engineering department at uni, obviosly not great quality
stuff. Gonna try chopping 'em up and seeing if we can get
it running full speed now.
And for my next challenge...
trying to my linux partion running red hat 9 to network
with the xp machines.

I know you said that the hub was working but just in case
try to bypass it just to test. connect two computers
together with a cross-over, if success communication throw
the hub away.
