Win2K VPN says server doesn't answer. Using DSL.

System is Win2K with SP4 running on a Macintosh with VirualPC 6.1 and Mac OS
10.2.8. Home network is BellSouth DSL, and I use an 8-port Linksys router.

Basically all dial-up and LAN/Ethernet functions work great. But now I'm
trying to set up VPN over Ethernet to a client's server, and when I try to
connect, I get "Error 678: There was no answer".

The server is alive: I can ping it at least. So I wonder if the "answer"
means that it never saw a darned thing at the other end, or can I get this
message if a response is not understood at my end?

If I try a new VPN connection from Mac OS, I get "The server does not
respond. Please verify your server address and try again."

I would try dial-up but the only people who know the phone number are out for
the rest of the week.

Thanks.

Error 678 means just what it says. You client did not receive any sort of
response from the server. Are you sure it is configured for VPN?

Thanks. I think it's a problem at their end: Using Novell's VPN and Border
Manager, I can "get in" to the network ... sort of. (They told me Win2K's VPN
was sufficient but I thought I'd give this a shot, since they use Novell and
Border Manager). When I first log in I get an error that it can't find the
tree or the server, yet Novell's activity dialog says I'm connected to the
right server, tree, and context. Then, when I browse around the network
places, while I see the various Novell servers and all at the top level,
nothing appears below other than my own workgroup and "computers near me" in
the house. I'm thinking it's a script issue at their end.
