I'm trying to establish a vpn connection where the server is a Mac OS X
server and the client (me) is a Win2K box. The server uses L2TP with
shared secret key which I understand Win2K doesn't readily support.

How do I configure Windows so that it works with pre-shared keys? I've
seen the Microsoft app note that describes how to hook up two servers
but this doesn't seem to work for a client. Although I get the feeling
I'm off by only one or two settings.

Any help would be appreciated.

The KB article refers to using a preshared key to manually configure ipsec policies
on each end of the router connection. Your best option is to try using XP Pro which
allows preshared key [though I don't know if it will work in that config] or trying
pptp on W2K. --- Steve

I know. I was hoping that I could use that as a starting point for getting a client
to talk to a server. For some reason the OS X server can't do PPTP properly (I was
told by my admin that PPTP broke when he upgraded to 10.3.4).

So, does anyone know definitively whether Win2Kpro can/can't be configured to run
L2TP/IPSec with a preshared key? If it can, how? If it can't, why not?
