Hi,
I have been trying to install the upgarde version of Windows 2000 on my
computer. Im installing to a SATA drive, but I can get that working now.
The problem lies where the installation is configuring windows 2000. The
setup hangs where it says something like 'reading dmreg.inf'. I have tried
many times and tried different things, but still cannot get it to go past
this point. I would appreciate any help with this.
Thanks

Usman

To do a clean install, either boot the Windows 2000 install CD-Rom or setup
disks. The set of four install disks can be created from your Windows 2000
CD-Rom; change to the \bootdisk directory on the CD-Rom and execute
makeboot.exe (from dos) or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and follow the
prompts.

(Note: If your drive controller is not natively supported then you'll want
to boot the Windows XP CD-Rom. Then *F6* very early and very important (at
setup is inspecting your system) in the setup to prevent drive controller
detection, and select S to specify additional drivers. Then later you'll be
prompted to insert the manufacturer supplied Windows XP driver for your
drive controller in drive "A")

Setup inspects your computer's hardware configuration and then begins to
install the Setup and driver files. When the Windows 2000 Professional
screen appears, press ENTER to set up Windows 2000 Professional.

Read the license agreement, and then press the F8 key to accept the terms of
the license agreement and continue the installation.

When the Windows 2000 Professional Setup screen appears, all the existing
partitions and the unpartitioned spaces are listed for each physical hard
disk. Use the ARROW keys to select the partitions Press D to delete an
existing partition, If you press D to delete an existing partition, you must
then press L (or press ENTER, and then press L if it is the System
partition) to confirm that you want to delete the partition. Repeat this
step for each of the existing partitions When all the partitions are deleted
press F3 to exit setup, (to avoid unexpected drive letter assignments with
your new install) then restart the pc then when you get to this point in
setup again select the unpartitioned space, and then press C to create a new
partition and specify the size (if required). Windows will by default use
all available space.

Be sure to apply SP4 and these two below to your new install before
connecting to any network. Internet included. (sasser, msblast)

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS03-043.mspx
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS03-049.mspx

Then

Rollup 1 for Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 4
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...CF-8850-4531-B52B-BF28B324C662&displaylang=en

Serial ATA came after Windows 2000 so you'll need the controller driver.

Hi,
I tried exatly that (and waited about 40 minutes) and it finally finished!
But when I tried to start it up, I got a stop error, that went like this:

STOP c000026c (Device driver failed to start)
C:\WINNT\system32\win32k.sys

Error status: 0xc0000221

I decided to repair the installation with the disc, and it fixed it. But
now, whenever I try to start Windows 2000 up, all I get (after it finishes
loading up), is a screen saying 'Setup will now restart........'. It hangs
there.
I'd appreciate any help on what I can do to fix this. Thanks

Did you F6 and provide the manufacturer serial ATA controller driver?

Hi Dave,

I certainly did. I have been able to install the files to the SATA disk,
but it hangs at the configuration. My basic hardware is as follows (in case
it helps):
Asus K8V Se Deluxe
AMD Athlon 64 3000+
512MB Crucial RAM
80GB Seagate Barracuda (SATA)
CD-Drive
Floppy drive

Thanks,
Usmanatron

I certainly did. I've been able to install the files to the SATA drive. It
starts to hang and slow down when it attempts to load the default
configuration.
In case it helps, this is a brief overview of my system:
Asus K8V se Deluxe
512MB Crucial Ram
AMD Athlon 64 3000+
CD drive, Floppy Drive
80GB Seagate Barracuda (connected to a Promise SATA RAID controller, that
has had the RAID part disabled)

Usmanatron

"I have been able to install the files to the SATA disk"

Not sure what this means but it doesn't sound the same as adding the
controller driver during text mode portion of setup.

Hi Dave,
Allow me to elaborate:
I added the controller driver at the start of the setup, using a floppy
disk, when it asked for 3rd part drivers. It installed the drivers without
any problems.
Continuing with the text potion of the setup, when it asks me to specify
a drive, the SATA drive is there I.E I can install Windows 2K onto it. It
installs some files, but when it tries to configure it, it slows down a lot.
After leaving it for ages (about 40 minutes), it gets past and reboots my
system. When I try to start up from here, I have received the stop error etc.
I hope this is a lot clearer :)

Regards,
Usmanatron

Yes, that clearer. If you waited for the prompt instead of using F6 then it
may have been too late.

Hi Dave,
Glad that's cleared it up.
Looking at the other threads, Ive noticed you know a lot about upgrading
2000. Do you have any idea what might be going on in this situation?
Id appreciate anything you can tell me

Thanks,
Usmanatron

Did you F6 to stop controller detection?

You might check the ASUS web site for an updated driver and or updated bios.
This is sounding like you may have some bad RAM or other hardware.

Hi Dave,

Had a look and tried various things. In the end, I tried a different stick
of RAM and it worked a charm! Thanks for the help, now it works!

You're welcome. Thanks for letting us know the outcome and resolution. Very
helpful when we hear back what actually worked.
