Win2K to WinXP_Pro - major problem !

Hello,
I was attempting to upgrade Win2K to WinXP_Pro on my IBM Thinkpad T22
laptop and it crashed and burned. The upgrade install failed when Setup was
attempting ton run Chkdsk, ostensibly due to lack of RAM (I have 512 MB, max
that the T22 will take). Set up then prompted me to try the process again
and each time it failed. Boot back into Win2K produced:

Stop 0 x 0000007B (0 x EB82784C, 0 x C0000034, 0 x 00000000, 0 x 00000000)
*** INACCESSIBLE BOOT DEVICE

I booted from CD-ROM and attempted to fix this through recover Consol but
being away from my office, I could not get around the Admin. Passwd set by
my IT folks who were gone by then. I installed new WinXP_Pro into C:\WINXP
and... it worked! Beautifully, in fact! Except that it created a new
Registry which essentially left me without ANY applications - I have Office
2003, Lotus Notes and MS Vis. C++ that I desperately need to get up and
running within a next day or two. I then got the IE to work and connected to
the 'NET and even my office LAN where XP_Pro correctly found DNS and DHCP
settings and properly set me up as a user within our corp. domain.

So, now I have a dual boot but with two OS'es installed on the same
partition. XP_Pro properly recognized and deleted the incomplete SetUp
pseudo OS generated previously, so now my only two options are XP_Pro and
Win2K. The former boots beautifully and gives me access to the 'Net but NOT
to my applications (sigh...); the latter bombs with the above Stop Error.
Can someone please help me figure out how to either migrate everything over
to XP_Pro (preferably!) or to at least restore Win2K to give me access to
all my previous work? I would be very, very grateful - dual boot with
everything working in either OS would be fine too, aside from being a bit
wasteful on the HD space - but being desperate, I'll take whatever I can get
:) ! Thanks very much! Regards, John

So you have a Working XP Operating System and a 'dead' 2K.

I would strongly recommend that you get your IT department involved, unless that is if you have all the application software available to install yourself.

What you have not made clear is, during the 'second' XP installation, did you install it as a dual-boot system, that is - do you now have a chioce after POST to start-up with XP or 2K?

OK. If you have all the stuff you need to go it alone, then use XP to access all the documents, spreadsheets, powerpoints, emails etc and copy them off to another PC or to a CD.

Once you are absolutely certain that you have everyhting you need, then start the PC from your XP CD and this time chgoose to remove the existing Windows XP and 2k, basicallly let it reformat the HDD and reinstall XP.

I suggest this, because it is impossible to uninstall 2K at this time. You cannot get XP to run any applications, unless they are freshly installed and you have a Hard Disk that is so full of unnecessary files.

Thus, easier by far to use the working Operating System [XP] to copy off the data that you need to save, it will see the files and allow you to access them, but of course it's way too late to use the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard and do a fresh install of XP and the Applications: after all you're now an experienced XP installer.

Yes, I have a choice of WinXP_Pro and Win2K after POST. I did not
install WinXP_Pro in dual boot config. I like your idea of clean
WinXP_Pro install but my IT guys are hell bent on Win2K. Do I gather
than that Win2K on this machine is a lsot cause? Even if I boot off of
a Win2K CD and attempt to user the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard?
Many thanks for your help. Cheers & Best Regards, John
