Win2K sp4 and onboard sound card cmedia AC97 issue

Hi all,

Extremely frustrated with this issue... so bear with me.

Recently upgraded a client's machine from win2k sp3 to sp4 (I
personally wouldn;t have done it, but his antivirus kept bugging to
install sp4).

Anyway, the sound stopped working!! Bloody Mary!! Scream....

Tried to uninstall sp4, but cannot do so.

After everything, the sound card stopped working. No audio. While in
control panel/sounds and clicking on Chord.wav; get the message "your
sound card maybe in use." Error code 31.

Under device manager, CMedia AC97 is listed with "?" as well as MPU-401
compatible midi device.

Went to CMedia website downloaded drivers; still problems.

The drivers from the motherboard manufacturer also do not seem to work.

One thing is that everytime I try to install or update the drivers, get
the message that the drivers are not digitally signed by ms and might
not work.

Any thoughts appreciated.

C-Media (onboard) Audio and Windows 2000 have never gotten along well together.
[I have had to dis-able many of these 'On-Board' Audio Components (initially) in our network environment when upgrading
to Windows 2000.]

My suggestion would be to check the C-Media Web Site for updated drivers for this computer's 'Audio' chipset.

If anything can be seen as good P.R. (with Windows 2000) - it is C-Media's attempt to stay "Usable" with the Windows
2000 Environment.

:-)

PS: If all else fails, check the motherboard's Manufacturer Site for updated drivers for the Audio component of their
motherboard.

That's OK, install anyway (you can always remove them later).

Is this a SiS chipset motherboard by any chance? If so, you may want to
try the realtek ac'97. I've had more driver issues with SiS chipsets
then any other. One of the most fun ones is there are some audio chips
that identify themselves as Sis 7012, but are in fact nothing of the
sort.
 
Also try booting in Safe Mode, go into Device Manager and remove
any entries related to your sound card. Then reboot and reinstall the
latest driver for your audio controller.
 
Okay, before I begin, thanks to all of you, Dude, Miller and Paulmd for
responding.

Dude: Win plug and play does pick up drivers but they do not work. I
have tried to point it to a directory with downloaded drivers from
cmedia and the motherboard cd - did not work.

Miller: Your experience with cmedia and windows2k, gave me hope that I
was not the only one who was having issues. Glad to hear that others
faced the same music - not that it is pleasant though.

Paulmd: Interesting take on chipsets over there.

Anyway, I downloaded a diag/reporting tool from
http://www.cybertechhelp.com/download/file/everest-home-edition

This reports everything on the pc. I did find the chipset identified
as "SiS 7012 Audio Device". No mention of cmedia in that report. find
the report in its full context below.

I will try to download realtec ac97 drivers and see if it works.

FWIW, I have an ECS K7S5A, and this particular mobo was shipped with 2
different AC97 audio chips, early board revs used a Realtek, the newer
version boards used a Cmedia chip. Try using the SIS7012 AC97 driver,
that is the one my particular version mobo needs/likes for the audio
to work, and it works very reliably. The other alternative is to
inspect the mobo and find the sound chip, this info is the best to
have to resolve this issue. The ECS web site suggests the P4S5MG
might need either the cmedia or the sis audio driver, see here:

The MPU-401 device is "included" with both the cmedia and SIS audio
packages (I believe), it's a "tagalong" device much like the gameport
device and a MS driver is typically installed for the device so long
as the hardware supports it.
